Could people please STOP sending confirmation requests or replies to
confirmation requests to the mailing list? All this misguided junk on
the mailing list is getting very annoying.

The subscription instructions explicitly state that you, when you
subscribe, should send your subscription confirmation reply to the
[email protected] address (and hence NOT to the
actual mailing list address [email protected]). Please note
the difference and please read the instructions more carefully the next
time.
