Mr. Project Expansion (was: How-To for Non Project Managers)

I'm new to this list, so please pardon my ignorance...

I'm working to complete my PMP certification - should be sometime next
month. In terms of best practices, I think it would save quite a bit of
time for now if you were to direct people to the Project Management
Institute website (http://www.pmi.org). They have quite a bit of
information available on-line, from introductory best practices to the
"gory details".

I also work for a company called QuantumPM (http://www.quantumpm.com)
that currently has a very heavy emphasis on MS Project Server 2002
because of previous ties to another company called E-Labor. They created
the technology behind MS Project Server (yes, the MS Borg machine went
into action again). I would love to see Mr. Project get some good
database integration capabilities using standard ODBC or JDBC
connectivity to MySQL, Postgres, Oracle, etc. Also, adding a browser
based component via a 3-tier architecture using Java and PHP on Apache
would be quite compelling. I'm not really a coder, so I don't really
know how I could help here, but I am a technology PM and a pretty good
network, systems administration and e-commerce guy. I also understand
the basics of database integration & enterprise storage.

Yes, I'm speaking of more or less cloning Project Server capabilities to
start with, but then also expanding on them while keeping everything
completely open. If Mr. Project could be taken in the direction of an
enterprise portfolio management tool that relies on truly open standards
and embraces PMI philosophy, I'm sure a lot of people would take notice.
I've run into many, many clients that love the capabilities of Project
Server, but are hesitant to buy because they fear "kissing the scorpion"
called MS.
