OK,

So I've looked more into the code, and it appears there is appropriate 
polling logic there.

I'm doing various debugging things including making the pl2303's buffer 
size smaller. The only thing so far that has worked is adding a sleep() 
after the write.

If I find the problem, I'll let you know.
