All of this is the opposite of how pan2 is designed to perform and
to how I see it perform every day.  0.127 should be many times faster
than 0.14.x.  How did you get your copy of 0.127?  Also, when the
GUI freezes for 20-30 seconds, are the CPU or hard disk thrashing?

If you're feeling like investigating this further, you might consider
running Pan and sysprof at the same time to see where Pan's spending
all of its time.
