Maybe GTK2, but I don't know.

How do I do that again?

Alternatively, maybe I could try compiling pan again, with GTK3.  I 
didn't work on a previous version.

It's possible it was something else, like last year or few, after I had 
added foreign unicode to my killfile, pan always crashed,  I removed the 
killfile and it worked again.  I still don't have a killfile again 
though, so that's not it.
