Thanks, great explanation.  I got Pan 0.150 to compile and install, it 
opens with my list
of groups, connects to Astraweb at 0 bytes/sec then crashes.

I am planning to upgrade to Ubuntu 20 and try again.  I suspect Pan 
needs one or more
of the optional dependencies of gmime-3.0 which I did not check for.
