Thanks. I actually started again from the beginning, running ldconfig
after the installation of every package, and it all worked properly
without needing this step. 
So, for future reference, it runs on RedHat9 with source installation
(in order) of

recode-3.6 (+ recode.patch)
python-bibtex-1.2.0
pygtk-2.2.0
gnome-python-2.0.2
pybliographer-1.2.3
