As you noticed, the field is named 'URL', hence the behavior. It would
be certainly possible to have a local link and use the mime type to
directly open the correct application, but this should be done in
another field I think.

On the pragmatic side, I don't remember having issues opening the file
in gv via my web browser, in an almost transparent fashion. If mozilla
is running (or your favorite web browser), does it correctly open the
file for you ?
