odd dialog height problem

I've encountered a very strange problem on one of my machines: the entry dialog is displayed at about a quarter of its usual height. Since it doesn't have any controls to allow it to be made bigger, I'm rather stuck. It does this under several different window managers, so it seems to be a pyb or gnome/gtk config issue, but whichever config file is causing the problem has been hard to track down.
