broken compile in gnome 2.9

Dear all,

For a whole pile of idiotic reasons, I have upgraded my version of
ubuntu to the beta (hoary hedgehog) version. ( This means that I'm
running gnome 2.9.x and basically using sid.) I can't install
pybliographer from the debian packages as can't find python-bibtex
(broken package). Python-bibtex won't compile as I have python 2.4 not
2.3: (I have the debian version of recode installed).

I think it is worth noting that when upgraded to 2.9 pybliographic was
uninstalled as part of the process: it worked with 2.8 perfectly.

Any ideas? I'm not scared to compile by hand.
