I confess that I thought the same recently but didn't dare to  
propose it ;-)  Anyway, for 1.2.7 it is too late, but in 1.2.8  
it should be corrected (and we already have one switch for  
backward compatibility . . .)

An autosave feature is part of version 1.2.7, due this weekend

With the new (UI Manager) code it should prove easy to add this,  
perhaps it can be done even for the next release? I will try to  
do so.  (Better still would be to make this user configurable.)
