runtime problem with recode?

I'm new here, so first off: hello!
I've installed pybliographer under Debian etch, and ran into the 
following problem.
When I tried to run the program, I got a complaint

ImportError: No module named _recode

Since there is a specific page dedicated to Recode problems, I assumed 
that this was the issue. I downloaded the source for Recode, applied the 
provided patch, and recompiled it. Nevertheless, I still get the same 
error. What have I left out? What else could be the problem?
