Yes, the BibTeX files exported by a number of systems lack citation keys.

No problem. However keyless entries were parsed by the baseline 1.3.3
version. Is it a symptom of some problem that they aren't now, or was
that a deliberate decision?

Thanks for the pointer. I can assign my own invented key for such cases.
