The preferred way is certainly to have your distro include the patch,
if it's not yet done. Which distro is it?
Alternatively, you can install a patched recode in a different
location and have pyblio use this version instead.

This is an old problem, I don't have all the context in memory
anymore. Basically, there hasn't been a release of recode for ages as
the maintainers were working on a new implementation. There were bugs
against various distros so that they include the patch, but I don't
think there is an official bugtracker for recode itself.

Regarding the problem itself: there was at least one blatant bug that
was only triggered when using the API (rather than the command line
tool), where random cruft was added to the converted string. I don't
remember exactly what other things the patch is supposed to fix, and
my email archive did not return anything useful...
