Hi Mark,

I am no expert in Rhythmbox, but I would suggest find something that does approximately what you want and use that for inspiration. I would humbly submit my plugin [1] as a starting point - if I was certain that it actually worked on a recent rhythmbox! 

So, in short, one option: find a maintained plugin and go from there.
