unable to connect to daemon

Beagle starts and runs, and I can search from gui, but each time a=A0 beagl=
e-index-info, or beagle-status is run from cli,=A0 "Could not connect to th=
e daemon."=A0 Asking gui to get index info vvia "Service Options -> Index I=
nformation" brings up a " Search service not running" with a button "Start =
search service".=A0 Which, incidentally, clicking the button will not start=
 a stopped beagle.=A0=20

this is running in gentoo x86_64 2.6.27-gentoo-r8
