Added wrinkle I just thought of: In Bugzilla, we had default assignees for some docs components set to [email protected] and gn [email protected]. There were also docs components that didn't use these default assignees, especially for software that wasn't core GNOME. We used these default assignees as a poor but passable way of knowing which components were under the docs team's maintainership, and thus which modules we could commit to directly. I don't think introducing different GitLab labels for this is a good idea. I don't have any other great ideas either. Maybe the answer is that we should embrace the merge request workflow, with a select few of us keeping tabs on where we can do merges without module maintainer approval.
