Threading is unrelated to quoting other than by cultural
practices.  Notice that this messages is threaded, my response is below the relevant text of the previous message, and all extraneous stuff has been deleted.

That some clients (Outlook & Gmail) make appropriately edited replaces
very difficult also isn't about threading.
