deskbar-applet crashes in 2.16.0

When I try to add the deskbar applet to my panel in a GARNOME 2.16.0 
build, it always crashes.  How should I debug such applet crashes?  Is 
there a way to launch applets from a terminal so that I can watch for 
error messages?
