Actually, "both" is the correct way for HTML mail. Roberts MUA sent a
MIME message with Content-Type: multipart/alternative, which contains
both alternatives, text/plain and text/html. The receiving MUA is
supposed to display one part only (hence alternative).

That said -- I do agree that for mailing list posts plain text should be
used exclusively. There is absolutely no need for HTML formatted text...
