Why do you have Ubuntu with Mate as Window Manager? Mate is not Gnome? Evolution is optimized for Gnome or...? (I am not sure.) You need to switch to Gnome with GDM (after installation) and restart. But read first howto about Installation of Gnome and activation of GDM. It is documented on askubuntu.com Before activating GDM you need to deactivate marco. Greetz.
