Requirements for gnome-vfsmm

Greetings,

I am thinking of using gnome-vfsmm in my application, but I don't want
to require everyone to have Gnome or even X installed.  It seems like
gnome-vfsmm requires gtkmm, which is a rather large beast.  Is that a
strong dependency, or is there something I can do to get around that?
The gnome-vfs C library doesn't seem to have a dependency on gtk.
