Of course a CM can have special interfaces to support specific features but there is a big part that is common to all MUC. I think IRC is a basic protocol with not that many features, Jabber chatrooms are by far more complex, so if gossip can manage correctly jabber chatrooms it should be ok for an IRC room too, at least it can be experimented.
