	You built pango with the ft2 backend I assume, otherwise the canvas
would not build - good;

	You need to hack up an XftConfig file, the one that works for me (YMMV)
on my Solaris box, that I snarfed from some kind Sun person is
http://primates.ximian.com/~michael/XftConfig. Possibly some variant of
that will help you.

	I have that in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 - a path created exclusively for this
file.
