can't rename a file

Hi guys,

I hope you can help me on this problem in my gnome environment.

I'm using CentOS4, my problem is, I can't rename folders on both Desktop 
and Home Folder
Once a file/folder is created, I am unable to change the names.

When right clicking on "rename", a box appears to change, but does
not respond when I actually punch in the key.

Screen pops up to change name, but my keyboard doesn't respond to any of
my typings.

Please help.
