pixels per inch

I am trying to make my fonts scale with dpi in am image library that
uses freetype and libart as it's renderer.

Does libart make some assumptions about how many pixels constitute and
inch -- eg, 72 points per inch in postscript, 96 pixels per inch in
gd?
