How to diagnose font issues

Hi,

I hope I do not spam the wrong ML, please let me know.

I have some issues making rsvg-convert work on my Linux box, to
generate a PNG image file from a SVG file.

The PNG output is fine, but the characters (using a TrueType font,
Bitstream Vera Sans): they appear quite larger than expected. Trouble
is that rsvg (or the underlying libraries) does not seem to make use
of the font name: I can select any font name in the SVG graphic file,
the PNG output is always the same. It probably selects a default font,
and the character extents are not known or not valid.

I'm looking for a way (debug traces, ...) to find why the font
rendering engine does not use the selected font (and first: which font
engine is actually used).

Environment is a Debian-i686 box 3.1

Best Regards,
Emmanuel.
