I have seen this. The fix, if I remember correctly, is to upgrade GTK+
to a 2.6 version. It contains a newer version of gdk-pixbuf. The
standalone "gdk-pixbuf" package is terribly old and unmaintained.

It is contained within the GTK+ package and has the same version as
the corresponding GTK+ package. You should be able to safely upgrade
from to GTK+ 2.6.x on RHEL3. I've done the same on my FC3 system.
