almost forgot: all of this applies if you're using a pretty recent
version of Mesa and the Linux kernel; in terms of driver support, you
need to have these three components:

  - libdrm
  - mesa
  - kernel

to be as up to date as possible, if you're using any open source driver.

if you're not using Linux as the kernel then I'm very, very sorry, but
you'll be fighting an uphill struggle.
