Hi Nicole, A good approach would be to pick a project that interests you and then go through the tutorials and code samples in the GNOME Developer Center for the language the project is using. https://developer.gnome.org/gnome-devel-demos/unstable/ Then you can look into fixing a small bug in the project you selected, study relevant code, and learn more of the language and GNOME APIs along the way. The mentor for the project should always be able to point you to relevant resources or explain any parts that are unclear. Good luck! Presently, I'm working through the tutorial and looking through the software projects and ideas pages to find out what I can contribute to. So far, I have mainly coded in Java and have done a summer of coding in C#, but doing a quick scan through the projects, it seems that C is the more preferable language to use. I'm willing to learn a new language, but will I be able to find a GSoC project given my current skill set? I'm looking forward to learning a lot!
