The future of Gnome CD Themes?

I've been playing around a little with Gnome CD and themes.

It doesn't seem like the Media theme works as documented, the buttons do
not change appearance and it doesnt seem any different from Red LCD.

You should find attached an attempt I made to put a custom middle image
into a theme.  I thought it might be fun to have a random background
image, a brief look at the code suggests it might not be too difficult to
make the changes I'm interested in without causing too much trouble.

>From what little information I've gathered I have gotten an impression
people want to kill off the themes for various reasons and use only Gnome
Themes.  Is there a specific plan to phase out themes, partly or
completely?
