Sure, and this option works in Gentoo.

But are there any plans to remove esound altogether? Are there plans to 
use libsydney or libcanberra (I don't remember which one does what)? Or 
to split out the esound library from the server? (or add a ./configure 
option to just build the library?)

I'm just looking for a little perspective on the subject so that we can 
start adapting :)
