customize file browser list view appearance

I need to change 3 aspects of file browser list view appearance:

1. font of text in cells (face/size/color)
2. alternating bg colors of rows (to increase contrast between
backgrounds of adjacent rows)

3. eliminate variable width of columns (that is, prevent name column,
for instance, from expanding/contracting depending on longest file
name in current dir)

I would be grateful for any pointers on what is entailed in
implementing these customizations
