Is canvas the container for file browser as well as Desktop ?

Dear nautilus coders,

Please help me understand the nautilus code: Using nautilus3.10.1 on
ubuntu14.04, GNOME desktop.

   - if I want to change something on desktop icon view (means desktop
   items) where should i look for the code. as I explored and understood that
   nautilus_canvas_container.c is the file that has function related with
   canvas items. like keyboard_arrow_key().....
   - But when I make changes in that, it works only for file browser not
   for desktop icon view.

please help to correct me and Feel free to ask more details.
