Gnome sttart button is gone

Hello all.  I have a laptop running RH V8.0.  last week my Gnome (start)
button went missing.  All the other buttons are still there.  Everything
else is working like normal. I have to kill X to login as anyone else or
shutdown.   I can't figure out how to get it back.  Anyone have any
ideas?
