I guess a silent machine is What kernel are you trying to compile? 2.4 kernels don't have ASLA support unless you compile ALSA seperately and then load modules. 2.6 has done away with the old Open Sound System in favor of ALSA. Are you trying to compile a 2.6 kernel? In addition, ALSA provides complete compatibility with the old OSS sound system. Non-alsa apps work fine with ALSA. Perhaps yor alsa library isn't compiled correctly? James Rich
