Dear Karl,

I was successfull in compiling garnome 2.8.0 on slackware-8.0. I'm using 
gcc-3.4.2, glibc-2.3.2, kernel-2.6.9-rc2-mm1.  I hve dowloaded 
glibc-2.3.2 from the slackware site using pkgtool the other tools where 
compiled using gcc.

You might wan't to try and compile gcc directly from the gnu website.
