garnome & glib

I am having problems getting garnome to install. I have poked around and 
it complains about ld exit status 1, then it dies (while compiling 
gtk2). Do i have to upgrade some libraries before i can get garnome to 
work? Do i need a newer version of glib? If i upgrade, will it affect my 
older gnome programs? I have ld exit 1 status problems compiling other 
programs as well.
