Gnome-apps crash when trying to enter print-menu; print preview is "empty"

Hi there,

I got here a *very* strange Problem with Gnome-print & cups which is
giving me relly headaches. - I first noticed it a few days ago, when
trying to print from evolution: evo simply - when trying to enter the
print-dialog - crashed.

Note: I don't use a fullfledged Gnome (only the needed libs etc.), but
run KDE 3.2.0 as GUI. The system is a dual PIII running vanilla 2.4.25
under Gentoo-x86. Current versions on my system are gnome-print-0.35-r3;
libgnomeprint-2.4.2; libgnomeprintui-2.4.2; cups-1.1.20

Evo gets a Segfault when gnome-print tries to access the cups printer.
If I try a "print preview" I get only a "blank page" shown.

In the process of trying to get things to work I've already re-build
gnome-print, libgnomeprint, libgnomeprintui, bonobo, libbonobo,
libbonoboui, evolution ... no success.

stracing evolution or cups hasn't given me any useful hints either.

I can reproduce the crash also with other gnome-apps, e.g. gThumb.

I got a gut-feeling that's something's wrong with my gnome-print and/or
cups ... but printing from other apps works so far fine.

If I launch Evo from the console and to to print-preview and try to
print afterwards I get the following messages (Note: The printer
"FS1000plusKPDL" is available for other apps, e.g. kprinter):

        (evolution:5435): GnomePrintCupsPlugin-WARNING **: The data for
the CUPS printer FS1000plusKPDL could not be loaded.

[many repeats of the above message]

        (instance)' failed

Any Ideas what I might try to do to fix this or where to start further
debugging efforts?

TIA

Stefan.
