Gnome Sound Server Status?

Hi Everyone,

        I am no hacker or anything and wonder if anyone can fill me in
the status of the sound server in gnome.  I use esound for a while.  It
is ok for minimal usage.  And latency problem is just bad.  I know there
are some replacement programs such as asd and arts.  I am not sure if
asd is dead and I think arts is not the right solution.  I am wondering
if there is any good simple solution in gnome or is there anyone wanna
develop something new?  I wanna see what I can do with it.  (Well, but I
don't have much programming experience) And can someone kindly give me
some pointers on creating a good sound server?  I was looking everywhere
but can't really find anything useful.
