The solution will be by 2.32 hopefully. The mockups were discussed at
the UX Hackfest and are here:

The sooner somebody starts working on it, the sooner it will be
available :)

Yes, because it serves no purpose for a majority of users. We'll be
removing even more settings for GNOME 3.0.

As for Ubuntu users specifically, and while we don't have an upstream
solution in GNOME itself, I'd recommend talking to the Ubuntu-tweaks
developers to have that configuration option added.
