It transpires that this is indeed the cause of the non-linearity, simply disabling it means we scale to 10,000 files in a directory rather nicely - although that chews a fairly huge amount of memory - it also means I can see /dev quickly without that annoying dialog. So, as Jody fixes this we need to bump the directory limit, perhaps double it to ~8000 ?.
