Please see my replies below. For future reference, it is probably better 
to send emails about documentation to [email protected] (I have 
CCd that list), although in this case a bug report at 
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/ against the ‘gdm’ product would have been 
appropriate also.

This change in the location of the session log occurred in GDM 3.5.2, 
and the documentation was not updated at the same time. I have filed a 
bug and attached a patch to it:

Once the patch is applied and a release is made which includes the 
corrections, that file will be automatically updated. There is a 3.6.2 
release scheduled for this coming Monday (12th November) which should 
hopefully include the fix.
