tips/trick to install Gnome...

My suggestion of steps to trick the bad install program:

USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK - I WILL NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSABILITI IF YOU 
TRASH YOUR SYSTEM AND WILL NOT HELP YOU TO FIX ANY PROBLEM THAT WAS
A RESULT OF FOLLOW THE STEPS. THIS STEPS ARE OFFERED 'AS IS' LIKE A
POSSIBLE SOLUTION, NEITHER THE BEST NOR THE CORRECT ONE.

1) go to ftp://ftp.ximian.com/pub/ximian-gnome/
2) download all the stuff you need to your particular distribution,
   for instance:

   cd /tmp/gnome  (as a suggestion of place to fut the files)
   wget -r -l 2 ftp://ftp.ximian.com/pub/ximian-gnome/redhat-72-i386/

3) get the installer running
4) tell it to get all the needed packages form the Internet (again)
  ----- BUT ---- look the next step!!

5) let it just start to download the first package and ABORT the
   installation - quit form the installation program,

6) use this sequence of command as root:

   ( assuming that you put the stuff at /tmp/gnome )

     cd /var/cache/redcarpet/packages
     mv rc* /tmp/gnome
     rm -rf packages
     ln -s /tmp/gnome packages
     cd /tmp/gnome

7) run the installer again 

   (FROM THE SAME SUBDIR WHERE ARE ALL THE FILES YOU DOWNLOADED AT
    STEP 1, in the example /tmp/gnome)

   and tell it (again) to get all the files form the Web.

8) when the installer ask you if you want to use the local files
   instead of download them again... tell it to do so for ALL files.

Now you will be in position to proceed with the installation making 
your normal choices of normal, full, etc...

I did this with my Red Hat 7.3 and the 1.2 Gnome one week ago.

For Gnome 2.0 snaps the installer want to remove many of my KDE packages
to full fill dependencies and I mostly will not to allow that!!!
So will keep Gnome 1.2 here to keep KDE 3.0.1 running as I use it most
of the time.

This installer is really dummy as is this "solution"  ;-)
