Figured this one out. Red-carpet installed the new Pango (1.2.1 I think) without removing the old one. Once I removed the older version of Pango things started working ok...on one machine. On the other box I still can't boot into Gnome but I have text now and I was able to start a failsafe session and get connected to the internet and start a new complete XD2 update. I can't believe this would happen to me twice in a row and not affect anybody else...
