I had the same issues with 15 Redhat 9 boxes. rcd would randomly take up 
99% CPU. I could not work out the cause - it seemed non-deterministic. 
This was going on for a few months.

I have subsequently upgraded the machines to Gentoo and as such am no 
longer using redcarpet.
