Re: Red Hat 9 end-of-life and Red Carpet

I tend not to trust upgrades between vendors.  If you have /home on a
different partition from / (and the same is true of any other
directories you need preserved), you can just do a clean install and not
reformat /home (and other such partitions).  Otherwise, you'll need to
tar up /home (and other such directories), store those files on another
box, do a fresh install, and restore the old directories.  I like to
back up /etc as well, though only for reference.  Things built from
source into e.g. /usr/local may well need to be rebuilt and reinstalled
on any OS upgrade, and things installed into /opt are similarly iffy.
Third-party software should probably be reinstalled.  That's pretty much
how I've done it.
