unable to determine system type

I've been a happy user of red-carpet for a couple of weeks now, but
today I get this error (which I don't find addressed in the FAQ):

    Red Carpet is unable to determine the system type or distribution of
    the system.  You must be running a supported distribution to use
    Ximian Red Carpet.  If you are running a supported distribution,
    this is usually cased by a modified system file.

Okay, what system file(s) might have "cased" this?  This is one of my
pet peeves: if you produce an error message, give me the info I need to
take action.

Can anyone help?
