Yes, sadly esound-devel doesn't include this, however it wouldn't be a
problem is it weren't the ONLY one. libtool (on Linux, at least) doesn't
need the .la files to link thinks properly, however, it will insist on
them for ALL libraries if they are present for SOME libraries, which
causes much breakage when compiling GNOME applications sometimes.  The
solution I have resorted to (it works, but it is really ugly) is the rm
-f /usr/lib/*.la solution.  I don't really recommend it for other
people, but perhaps the:

rename .la .la.old /usr/lib/*.la
make
rename .la.old .la /usr/lib/*.la.old

will work (still a hack, but less ugly than deleting them)
I pointed this out a LONG time ago (and in fact, filed a bug report in
bugzilla, which was promptly, and irritatingly, resolved as either
WONTFIX or NOTABUG), but it fell on deaf ears at the time.
