sounds like you're using a proportional font, which (at least in the Red 
Hat version) it will let you do. to make them monosopace, the software 
adds spacing to the proportional fonts which looks really, really bad. 
try switching to, say, lucida console or lucidatypewriter, or some other 
monospace font.
